Ujjain is one of the seven Moksha-Puri cities of Hinduism, where the soul is said to attain liberation. The Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is the centre of gravity, but the full circuit covers six other major shrines — each with its own history, ritual, and reason to visit. This silo is the encyclopedia.

Most visitors come to Ujjain for the Mahakaleshwar Bhasma Aarti and leave the next day. That is a missed opportunity. The other Ujjain temples — Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath, Harsiddhi, Chintaman Ganesh, Sandipani Ashram, and the rarely-opened Nagchandreshwar — complete a circuit that, taken together, is one of the oldest continuously operating pilgrimage routes in India. The standard circuit fits in 2 full days; the immersive version is 4-5 days including Omkareshwar.

The Two-Day Pilgrimage Circuit

The traditional Panchakroshi parikrama covers a 118 km route around Ujjain over 5 days with stops at 4 sacred villages. For a shorter pilgrimage that touches the essential shrines, this two-day plan is what locals recommend:

Day 1 (Mahakal day)

3:00 AM — Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar (pre-booked)
6:30 AM — Breakfast at hotel; rest
10:00 AM — Kal Bhairav Temple (the liquor offering)
12:30 PM — Harsiddhi Mata Temple darshan and lunch nearby
4:00 PM — Sandipani Ashram, the gurukul where Krishna and Sudama studied
7:00 PM — Mahakaleshwar Sandhya Aarti (open darshan)

Day 2 (Outer temples)

7:00 AM — Mangalnath Temple (where planet Mangal was born)
10:00 AM — Chintaman Ganesh Temple
12:30 PM — Ramghat darshan and Shipra river bath
3:00 PM — Vedh Shala (Jantar Mantar Ujjain — Vikramaditya's astronomical observatory)
6:00 PM — Final Mahakal darshan and departure
