Where the Administration Office Is

The Mahakaleshwar Temple Committee's administration office is located inside the temple complex, immediately adjacent to Gate 4 on the eastern side. From the Mahakal Lok corridor exit, walk towards Gate 4 — the office is a single-storey sandstone building on your left, marked with a Hindi/English sign reading "श्री महाकालेश्वर मंदिर समिति / Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Committee".

Inside, there are typically two or three counters labelled by category: General, VIP/Mandapam, and Sankalp/Special Puja. The Bhasma Aarti permission letter is issued from the General counter unless you are booking a premium mandapam tier. See the gate map for the precise location relative to other landmarks.

Counter Timings & Release Schedule

The offline counter operates on a different schedule from the online portal. Unlike the online slots which release exactly 60 days in advance, offline slots release on the evening preceding the aarti.

The 7–9 PM evening window is the most important. This is when the temple administration releases unsold online slots, no-show buffers, and dedicated walk-in inventory. On a typical Tuesday, roughly 80 slots are issued in this window.

Documents Required

The offline counter accepts the same six photo IDs as the online portal: Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, Voter ID, Driving Licence, and Government employee ID. Bring the original plus one photocopy per devotee. The counter does not have a photocopy machine; the nearest shop is opposite the administration office, charging ₹2 per page.

• Original photo ID for each devotee (mandatory)
• Photocopy of each ID (mandatory)
• ₹200 per devotee in cash — the counter takes UPI but the QR system is frequently down
• Two passport-size photographs are not required for Bhasma Aarti (this is a common misconception — photos are only needed for Sankalp puja)
• If booking for a family group: one elder presents IDs for all; children under 5 need not be listed

Queue Tactics That Work

The 7 PM release window is where local knowledge matters. From observation across many visits:

• Arrive by 5:30 PM. The queue at the counter starts forming 90 minutes before the window opens.
• Do not split your group across multiple queues. One person, one queue, all IDs together.
• Keep cash counted. The counter staff process faster when you hand over exact change with the documents on top.
• Do not engage middlemen. Anyone offering to "help you skip the queue" for ₹1,000–2,000 outside the office is running a scam — they have no special access. The actual queue is short enough that 60–90 minutes of patience always beats paying them.
• Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are the lowest-demand evenings. Monday is the busiest (Shiva's day). Saturday is the second busiest.

When Offline Beats Online

For ordinary weekday slots, online is faster. But there are four scenarios where the offline counter is decisively better:

1. Sawan Mondays. The online portal clears in 15 seconds. The offline 7 PM release the previous evening is your only realistic option without paying VIP rates.
2. Last-minute travel. You arrive in Ujjain at 4 PM — online does not allow same-day bookings under 16 hours away. Offline can still issue a slot for the next morning.
3. Senior citizens and group bookings. Manual processing handles age concessions and special seating requests more reliably than the portal.
4. Foreign nationals. The online portal rejects non-Indian phone numbers and many international card types. The offline counter has a separate register for foreign devotees and accepts passports plus cash without issue.

Festival Day Rules

On Mahashivratri, Nag Panchami, Shahi Sawari days, and the four Sawan Mondays, the offline counter operates under different rules:

• The 7 PM walk-in window typically opens at 5 PM instead, releasing limited buffer slots.
• Slots are restricted to one per ID — no group of 5 from a single phone.
• VIP and Sankalp categories close entirely; only General is offered.
• Security checks are heavier — bring all original IDs, not just photocopies.
• Cash-only on these days. Even working UPI counters route only emergency-category bookings.
